With the Lammermuir Hills to the north and the Cheviot Hills to the south, Chirnside village is situated on a hill which rises to about 500 feet above sea level. Its name is believed to be derived from a Cairn which stood nearby on Harelaw Hill. The village dates back to the reign of King Edgar (1097-1107).

This site gives some of its history (Chirnside Paper Mill; Maines House; Ninewells; the Old Church; Whitehall) and there is a blog of history between the 1930’s and the 1960’s.
